Where the World's Best Surfers Come to Play
Tucked away on the remote east coast of Sri Lanka, Arugam Bay is a world-renowned surfing destination with an utterly laid-back beach vibe. The surrounding area is rich in wildlife, ancient temples, and natural beauty — ideal for travellers seeking adventure, culture, and relaxation in one place.
Consistently ranked among the top 10 surfing breaks in the world. A long right-hand point break producing rides of up to 200 metres on a good day. Best surf season: June to September. Beginners should head to Peanut Farm beach where surf schools offer excellent lessons.
An early morning canoe or kayak trip across the lagoon behind the bay almost guarantees sightings of: wild elephants drinking at the water's edge at dawn, mugger crocodiles sunbathing on banks, dozens of water bird species, and playful otters in the shallows.
Hidden in the jungle 15km south — an ancient forest monastery complex dating back 2,000 years, carved into granite boulders. A small community of monks still lives here. The 30-minute climb to the summit rock reveals endless jungle stretching to the coast, with wild elephants frequently visible below.
Arugam Bay has a wonderfully eclectic culture — local Tamil families, long-term expat surfers, yogis, and backpackers worldwide. Local rice and curry on banana leaves sits alongside excellent pizza, smoothie bowls, and fresh seafood BBQ on the beach. The evenings are casual — a fire with a guitar rather than a loud nightclub.
The drive to Arugam Bay passes through the Cultural Triangle and beautiful hill country. Terry Cabs can arrange your private transfer, stopping at key sites along the way.
