The Golden Temple of Sri Lanka
Perched on a massive rocky outcrop in the centre of Sri Lanka's Cultural Triangle, the Dambulla Cave Temple is the best-preserved cave temple complex in the country. Inside its five main caves are over 150 Buddha statues and 2,000 square metres of murals — a UNESCO-protected masterpiece of ancient Sinhalese art spanning 22 centuries.
At the base of the hill — a 30-metre golden Buddha statue in the Dhamma Chakka posture, visible from the main road. Inside the base is a small museum dedicated to Buddhism.
About 360 steps up Dambulla Rock (160 metres). Takes 15–20 minutes on the paved, tree-shaded path. Watch out for monkeys snatching food! From the top, on a clear day, you can see Sigiriya Rock Fortress 20km away.
The prime location for hot air ballooning in Sri Lanka. Sunrise flights (6 AM) drift silently over the jungle with views of Sigiriya Rock, Kandalama Lake, and elephants waking up below — a bucket-list experience.
Sri Lanka's only dry-zone arboretum, just a few kilometres away. The Night Safari is one of the best places in the world to spot the elusive Grey Slender Loris, a tiny nocturnal primate with large eyes.
