Sun, Sand, and Gentle Giants
Located on Sri Lanka's stunning southern coast, Mirissa has evolved from a quiet fishing village into one of the island's premier holiday destinations. Golden sands, turquoise water, whale watching, surf, and a laid-back nightlife scene make it the ultimate tropical getaway.
Mirissa is internationally famous for Blue Whales — one of the best places on Earth to see the largest animal to ever live. Season runs November to April. Boats leave Mirissa Harbour around 6:30 AM. Spinner Dolphins and Sperm Whales are frequently seen too.
A private coconut estate on a high cliff overlooking the Indian Ocean. The contrast of red clay earth, green palms, and blue ocean makes for spectacular photos. Go at sunrise for a peaceful experience — sunset gets very crowded.
On the left side of the main beach near the harbour wall, large Green Turtles visit daily to feed. Rent a snorkel mask for a few hundred rupees and watch them glide beneath you. Please do not touch them.
The main point break on the western end of the beach is great for intermediate surfers. For beginners, Weligama (10 minutes away) is the ideal learning spot with dozens of surf schools.
After sunset, restaurants bring out fresh catch of the day on beds of ice — point at what you want and they grill it under the stars. Popular spots like Zephyr and Kama are famous for cocktails and DJ sets.
15km east of Mirissa — the southernmost tip of Sri Lanka. The 49-metre Dondra Head Lighthouse (1889) is the tallest in Sri Lanka. Look south and there is no land between you and Antarctica.
Skip the crowded buses and trains. Terry Cabs offers private, air-conditioned transfers from the airport directly to your hotel in Mirissa.
