Polonnaruwa

The Medieval Capital of Sri Lanka

Polonnaruwa Ancient Ruins Sri Lanka

If Anuradhapura is the spiritual cradle, Polonnaruwa is the artistic masterpiece. Sri Lanka's second capital (11th–13th centuries) is a UNESCO World Heritage site with remarkably well-preserved monuments — intricate stone carvings, massive brick structures, and the finest Buddhist art in the country.

1. Gal Vihara: Masterpieces in Stone

Four magnificent Buddha statues carved from a single slab of granite:

  • The 14-metre Reclining Buddha at Parinirvana — with the depression in the pillow under his head.
  • The 7-metre Standing Buddha — unique sorrowful expression still debated by historians.
  • Two Seated Buddhas on lotus thrones.

2. The Sacred Quadrangle

The most concentrated collection of ancient buildings in Sri Lanka. The Vatadage (Circular Relic House) is the highlight — a small stupa surrounded by four Buddhas and concentric stone pillars with exquisitely preserved moonstones and guardstones.

3. Parakrama Samudra (The Sea of Parakrama)

A massive man-made tank so vast it looks like an ocean. Built by King Parakramabahu I, whose motto was: "Let not even a drop of rain water go to the sea without benefiting man." A perfect sunset walk or bike ride along the bund.

4. The Monkey Kingdom

Polonnaruwa is home to three monkey species including the energetic Toque Macaque — the stars of Disney's documentary "Monkey Kingdom", filmed right here! Watch them playing on the ruins, but secure your food and bags.

5. The Lotus Pond (Nelum Pokuna)

A small stone bath cut into the shape of a blooming eight-petalled lotus flower. A perfect example of how the ancients combined utility with beauty.

Practical Travel Tips

  • Rent a Bike: The site is flat and compact — cycling is the ideal way to explore.
  • Buy Tickets First: At the Archaeological Museum near the lake — not inside the ruins.
  • Wear Thick Socks: The stone gets scorching hot in the afternoon sun.
