Yala National Park

In Search of the Sri Lankan Leopard

Leopard in Yala National Park Sri Lanka

Located on the southeast coast of Sri Lanka, Yala National Park covers 979 square kilometres of dense jungle, dusty plains, and ocean-edge coastline. It is home to one of the highest densities of leopards in the world. If you want to see a big cat in the wild, this is the place.

1. The Kingdom of the Leopard

The Panthera pardus kotiya — Sri Lanka's native leopard — is the apex predator here. With no lions or hyenas to hide from, they are bolder than anywhere in Africa, often seen walking the jeep tracks during the day. Look for them resting on rocky outcrops or high tree branches. Listen for monkey alarm calls — they signal a leopard is nearby.

2. More Wildlife

  • Sri Lankan Elephants: Herds are common near waterholes. You may spot a rare tusker.
  • Sloth Bears: Shy normally, but active during the May/June Palu fruit season.
  • Birdlife: Over 215 species — Painted Stork, Peacock, Malabar Pied Hornbill.
  • Mugger Crocodiles: Frequently basking along waterways.

3. Choosing Your Safari Block

Block 1 has the highest leopard density but gets crowded. Block 5 is quieter with beautiful forest and no jeep jams. Ask your driver for advice based on current conditions.

4. Sithulpawwa Rock Temple

Deep inside the park — an ancient monastery dating back 2,000 years, once home to 12,000 monks. Climbing the summit rock gives a 360-degree view of the park, with wild elephants visible in the forest below.

5. Patanangala Beach & Tsunami Memorial

One of the few places you can exit your jeep inside the park. A rugged, beautiful beach with a memorial to the 2004 Tsunami — a peaceful stop for breakfast.

Practical Tips

  • Safari Times: Morning (6–10 AM) or afternoon (3–6 PM).
  • Annual Closure: Block 1 closes for 4–6 weeks around September/October.
  • Dress: Neutral colours, hat, sunscreen, and plenty of water.
